What’s your entrepreneurial vision of where you want to take your business? What books are you reading to get you there? Like many of you, I didn’t attend college. College is great and required for many people, but for not for me. Like many, I am self-educated from the reading of many books. I’ve read hundreds on the subject of leadership, marketing and selling. I didn’t have to take trigonometry or a calculus course to learn how to make a profit or balance my books; I just read enough on leadership to know that I needed to lead and allow others to do what they do best.

Consider these facts from the Readers Are Leaders Foundation. The facts focus on Houston and the state of Texas…but point to a huge problem throughout the United States.

  • In Houston, almost one million adults are functionally illiterate.
  • Approximately 52% of adults in Harris County are functionally illiterate in English.
  • At least 31% of adults in Houston perform at the lowest level of literacy.
  • Texas ranks 47 out of the 50 United States in terms of English literacy.
  • Houston is listed at 49 in overall literacy out of America’s 64 largest cities.
  • 68% of those arrested 75% of welfare dependents, 85% of dropouts and 72% of the unemployed are identified as functionally illiterate.
  • 3 of 4 Texas inmates are functionally illiterate.
  • 85% of teenagers appearing in juvenile court are functionally illiterate.

As Harry S. Truman said, “Not all readers are leaders, but all leaders are readers.”  If you want to achieve more in your business, read good business books. If you’d like to know the books I’ve read that helped me the most, just click here and ask. I’d love to talk with you about reading.

My first book came on the market in December, and I’m very excited to share it with you. Perhaps it can help you become the leader you want to be!
